Swim Curriculum

3 - 5 Years Old:
Green | Yellow | Blue

1st Grade & up:
Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4

Green

3 & 4 years old

Ribbon 1:
  • blow bubbles
  • retrieve objects from step
  • jump off step and submerge assisted
  • drop in from sitting, turn and grab wall assisted
  • climb out of pool unassisted
Ribbon 2:
  • push off and glide to teacher
  • kick across station assisted
  • drop in from sitting, turn and grab wall unassisted
  • submerge face for 10 counts
Ribbon 3:
  • back float assisted
  • jump in and kick to teacher
  • bobs with teacher for breath control
  • push off step and kick to teacher
Goal: Kick to teacher in correct prone position with kicks at top of the water and comfort on assisted back float.

Yellow

3 year olds that have mastered all green skills

Ribbon 1:
  • 10 bobs with breath control
  • front float and kick for 10 counts (head in correct position)
  • retireve objects in shallow water
  • kick from teacher to step
Ribbon 2:
  • kick from teacher to wall
  • jump in and turn kick back to step
  • back float unassisted
  • kick across station with assistance midway
Ribbon 3:
  • kick across station unassisted
  • push off wall and kick to teacher
  • jump in and kick across station
  • assisted arms on front stroke
Goal: stong kick across the station and ready to add arms

Blue

4 & 5 years old

Ribbon 1:
  • push off and glide to teacher
  • front float with kicks for 10 counts (head in correct position)
  • retrieve objects in deeper water
  • kick across station with assistance midway
  • back float assisted
Ribbon 2:
  • kick across station unassisted
  • knee dive and kick across station
  • front stroke with arms
  • back float unassisted
Ribbon 3:
  • jump in and front stroke across station
  • roll over and rest swim
  • take breath to side with assistance
  • tread water with assistance
  • flutter kick on back
Goal: strong front stroke, arms ready to begin breathing, and beginning back stroke

Level 1

1st grade & up

Ribbon 1:
  • push off and glide to teacher
  • front float with kicks for 10 counts (head in correct position)
  • jump from side to teacher
  • kick across station with assistance
  • 10 bobs for breath control
  • back float assisted
Ribbon 2:
  • kick across station unassisted
  • kick on back assisted
  • unassisted back float
  • front stroke with arms
  • knee dive across station
  • retrieve objects in deeper water
Ribbon 3:
  • flutter kick on back
  • survival float for 10 counts
  • front stroke across station
Goal: strong front stroke and beginning back stroke;ready to begin side breathing and add endurance

Level 2

1st grade & up

Ribbon 1:
  • tuck float for 10 counts
  • knee dive front stroke across station
  • roll over and rest swim
  • side breathing on front stroke
  • back stroke
Ribbon 2:
  • treading unassisted for 10 seconds
  • sculling assisted
  • strong front stroke with side breathing for 2 lengths of station
  • back stroke for 2 lengths of station
Ribbon 3:
  • treading unassisted for 30 counts
  • underwater swim
  • knee dive and swim front or back stroke
  • strong front stroke for 3 lengths of station
Goal: strong front crawl with side breathing, stonrg back crawl and added endurance; ready to begin dolphin kicks, whip kicks, and bilateral breathing

Level 3

1st grade & up

Ribbon 1:
  • retrieve multiple objects from deeper water
  • treading unassisted for 1 minute
  • somersaults in water
  • changing directions while swimming
  • bilateral breathing on front stroke
  • front stroke 1 full lap in pool
Ribbon 2:
  • survival float for 2 minutes
  • knee dive and swim the length of the pool
  • front and back stroke- 1 lap in pool for each
  • dolphin kicks
  • underwater swim 1 1/2 lengths of the station
Ribbon 3:
  • surface dives and retrieve multiple objects
  • long shallow dives
  • underwater swim for 2 lengths of station
  • front and back stroke- 1 1/2 laps in pool for each
  • whip kicks
Goal: improved distance on front and back stroke, bilateral breathing, dolphin kicks, and whip kicks; ready to begin arms for dolphin and whip kicks, elementary back stroke, and side stroke.

Level 4

1st grade & up

Ribbon 1:
  • front and back stroke- 2 laps in pool for each
  • somersault push off wall
  • add arms for dolphin kicks (butterfly)
  • scissor kick assisted
Ribbon 2:
  • increased lap speed
  • treading for 2 minutes with clothes
  • add arms to whip kicks (breast stroke)
  • add arms to scissor kicks (side stroke)
Ribbon 3:
  • correct flip turns
  • 10-minute lap swim
  • combine 4 competitive stroke- 1 lap in pool for each
  • strong butterfly, breast stroke, and side stroke
  • whip kicks and arms on back (elementary back stroke)
Goal: perfected front and back stroke with good endurance; strong butterfly and breast stroke, beginning side stroke, and elementary back stroke; ready to begin team readiness.
